Here's what's happening in pop culture:

• The New York Times reports that Jimmy Fallon will succeed Jay Leno as host of "The Tonight Show" by next year – and the show will move back to New York. Of course, we thought Conan O'Brien would host "The Tonight Show" for years and years, and look what happened there. [The New York Times]

• Singer Michelle Shocked is apologizing for comments at a San Francisco show last weekend that were perceived as anti-gay. "I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else)," she wrote in a rambling explanation. [Entertainment Weekly]

• Disney is remaking its 1977 live-action/animated hybrid "Pete's Dragon" – and if you don't remember it, neither does anybody else. (It featured the big-screen acting debut of Helen Reddy, if that helps.) Even weirder, one of the writers hired to write the screenplay is David Lowery, who directed the outlaws-on-the-run Sundance entry "Ain't Them Bodies Saints." [Vulture]
