Southern Utah football begins preparations for the fall Tuesday with the start of spring practice.

The Thunderbirds finished 4-4 their first season in the Big Sky Conference and 5-6 overall under coach Ed Lamb, who begins his sixth season in Cedar City.

Fifteen starters are scheduled to return, seven on defense, including linebacker Zak Browning and defensive end James Cowser. Browning led the nation's freshmen with an average of nearly 12 tackles a game. He also forced five fumbles and picked off a pass.

Workouts are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 11 a.m. Saturdays. The spring game is set for April 27 in Eccles Coliseum.

Lamb must also find a replacement for departed senior quarterback Brad Sorensen, the school's all-time leading passer.

The 2013 season begins Sept. 29 at South Alabama.
