Re "Public deserves a say on moving the prison" (Opinion, March 24):
Sugar House Park, the site of the original Utah Territorial Prison, is a huge and much appreciated asset to the greater Salt Lake Valley. In contrast, Sandy City Mayor Tom Dolan won his re-election bid by a margin of only 6 percentage points due to his decision to develop the old quarry at 9400 South rather than build a large regional park at that site that the south valley needs and many residents want.
If the plan were to follow past precedent and build that much-needed south valley regional park to replace the prison, how much support from the Legislature would the proposal to move the prison from Draper receive? My guess is that spending $500 million to benefit the many would not generate anywhere near the support that spending $500 million to benefit the few has.
