Kaysville police probe 'unusual' death of 13-year-old girl

Kaysville police say it could be up to two months before they know how 13-year-old Rebecca Tibbitts died.

Until the state Medical Examiner's Office completes its report, however, Kaysville police Sgt. Paul Thompson said the death of the Centennial Junior High School student Monday morning at her home has left investigators with more questions than answers.

Police and emergency medical personnel responded about 6 a.m. Monday to a 911 call reporting a possible drowning at the girl's Kaysville home. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed, and she was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

"This was an unattended death, so we're calling it 'unusual' until we get the medical examiner's report. That should give us some answers," Thompson said Friday.

He said it typically takes six to eight weeks to receive the results from the autopsy and associated forensic testing.
