State colleges: Arizona baseball team beats Utah, 15-4

The Arizona baseball team used two big innings to beat Utah 15-4 on Friday in Tucson, Ariz.

Arizona scored five runs in the third inning and seven runs in the fifth inning to take control of the game. Although each team had 10 hits, the Utes had four errors, walked nine and hit three batters.

The Wildcats jumped on Utah starter Joe Pond for six runs on six hits over four innings, and went on to win the Pac-12 game. Tyler Relf had three hits for the Utes (12-12, 2-6), while Trey Nielsen and T.J. Bennett each hit RBI doubles.

Trent Gilbert had five RBIs for Arizona (17-11, 2-6).

BYU 10, Pepperdine 9 • Brock Whitney and Jacob Hannemann each ripped three hits, and Whitney drove in three runs as BYU won in Provo.

The Cougars (13-13, 2-3 West Coast Conference) clinched the three-game series, with Game 3 scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.


Arizona 6, Utah 5 (11) • The Wildcats scored on a single in the 11th inning to keep the Utes (13-16, 0-5) winless in Pac-12 play this season. Jackie Sweet had two hits, including a three-run homer, for Utah.

Houston 7, BYU 3 • In Provo, Houston jumped to a five-run lead off BYU starter Hannah Howell in the first inning and held on for the win. Marissa Bravo had two hits and two RBIs for the host Cougars (14-16).

Utah Valley 10-7, CSU Bakersfield 1-1 • In Orem, UVU swept the doubleheader as Amanda Robinson went 6-for-7, Dynasty Lauvai drove in five runs, and starter Tiffany Mills had seven strikeouts while earning the win in each game.

Track and field

In Orem, Utah Valley athletes posted seven first-place finishes in the third annual UVU Collegiate at the Hal Wing Track & Field. Joshua McCabe won the men's 5,000 meters in 15 minutes, 21.60 seconds, leading four UVU runners in the top five.

In Stanford, Calif., Utah State junior Kaylee Hartshorn won the women's collegiate portion of the javelin at the Stanford Invitational with a throw of 42.16 meters.
