A tragic accident involving a toddler, a pickup truck and a trailer culminated in the weekend death of a Wellsville man.

Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Brian Locke said Steven Speth, 54, was pronounced dead at Logan Regional Hospital about 8 p.m. Sunday, about three hours after being run over by a utility trailer.

Speth's wife and daughter were hooking the trailer to a Dodge Durango pickup truck when Speth's 2-year-old grandson, who had been in the truck's back seat, climbed into the driver's seat.

"The child was able to pull the shift lever out of park," Locke said. "Because of the hill the vehicle was on, it started to roll."

Speth ran to help his wife and daughter as they tried to stop the rolling truck. The sequence of events remained under investigation on Monday, but somehow Speth slipped or fell and was run over by the trailer.

The pickup traveled about half a block before colliding with a parked vehicle.

The child was not hurt.
