A dean from the University of Illinois will become the new senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Utah.

Ruth Watkins will step into a position vacated in January 2012 when David Pershing was named president of the university, according to a U. news release. Watkins, a professor of speech and hearing science, has spent 20 years at the University of Illinois. Now dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at U. of I., she was passed over for a vice chancellor of academic affairs position there last year, according to a press release.

Watkins will start Aug. 1, replacing interim vice president Michael Hardman. He will start a new job as chief global officer working on international issues.
