State colleges: Utah baseball team rallies past Washington State

Pinch hitter Connor Eppard hit a two-run double as the Utah baseball team rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to beat Washington State 7-4 Friday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Tyler Relf also hit an RBI double in the inning for the Utes (13-13, 3-7 Pac-12).

Sophomore starter Mitch Watrous earned the win, scattering 12 hits over eight innings while giving up four runs.

Utah's T.J. Bennett and Wyler Smith had two hits each, and Relf scored three runs.

Leadoff batter Jason Monda had three hits and two RBIs for the Cougars (16-12, 3-4).

BYU 8, Santa Clara 2 • In Santa Clara, Calif., BYU's Hayden Nielsen hit three run-scoring singles, and pitcher Adam Miller earned the win by holding the Broncos (8-20, 0-8 West Coast Conference) to two runs over five innings.

Jaycob Brugman was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI for the Cougars (16-14, 4-4).

Utah Valley 3, NJIT 1 • In Newark, N.J., Adam Gunn held NJIT to three hits over seven scoreless innings to earn the win for UVU (10-17, 1-0) in its Great West Conference opener.

Softball

BYU 2-4 , Utah Valley 1-6 • In Orem, BYU's Ashlee Brawly Robinson went 3-for-4 and drove in the winning run with an eighth-inning single in the opener of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader. UVU's Debra Lovell hit a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh of the second game.

Utah State 2, UT-San Antonio 1 (8) • In Kaysville, Kassandra Uchida's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Aggies (7-28, 1-6) to their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season.

Southern Utah 0-3, Sacramento State 8-1 • In Cedar City, SUU pitcher Astley Osher had eight strikeouts, and Kadi Henderson drove in two runs as the Thunderbirds won Game 2 to salvage a doubleheader split.

Idaho State 9-7, Weber State 6-2 • In Pocatello, Idaho, Weber State's Brooke Silva went 2-for-3 with a homer in the opener, but the Wildcats committed four errors and lost.
