Mike Lee and the boys

Why am I not surprised to learn that Sen. Mike Lee, the embarrassment who passes for a senator from Utah, opposes a treaty supported by 153 nations that would regulate global arms trading ("Lee among 35 in Senate to oppose arms deal," Tribune, April 4)? He fears it would infringe on Americans' right to bear arms. Seriously?

As we all know, you can tell a lot about a person by the company he keeps. With which world leaders does Lee stand shoulder to shoulder in opposing the treaty? Why, Kim Jong Un of North Korea, Bashar Assad of Syria and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran.

By his opposition, Lee puts himself in the company of terrorists, advocates of genocide and perpetrators of war crimes. Who cares how many die round the world as long as Billy Bob can keep his rocket launcher here at home?

With his utter conviction that he knows and understands the Constitution like no one else (except maybe God), Lee would probably have sided with the 9/11 hijackers and their right to bear boxcutters if that is how some right-wing nutter from the National Rifle Association were to interpret the Second Amendment.
