For UHP trooper, trouble came knocking on his door

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper learned that even when off-shift and at home on a Sunday afternoon, the job can come knocking at your door.

Literally.

Salt Lake City police Det. Rick Wall said an intoxicated 37-year-old man came to the trooper's home near 1700 E. Browning Avenue (1400 South) about 1 p.m. Sunday. He began pounding the door and shouting at the trooper.

When told to leave the property, the suspect refused and the trooper called SLCPD.

Learning police were on the way, the man tried to leave, but the trooper detained him until officers arrived and made the arrest.

The man was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of third-degree felony witness tampering and misdemeanor counts of resisting an officer, public intoxication, criminal trespass and having an open container of alcohol in a public place.

He was being held Monday in lieu of $1,170 bail, jail records showed.

SLCPD reported the suspect and trooper were acquainted through a "previous professional" encounter, but UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said the trooper did not know the man.
