Sen. Mike Lee has vowed to filibuster any legislation requiring background checks when purchasing a firearm ("Lee vows to filibuster gun-control legislation," Tribune, March 27). Public opinion has been running at about 90 percent in support of universal background checks.
Lee's bold position to protect the right of criminals, the severely mentally ill and people with a history of violence to buy any manner of guns seems wacky and out of touch with his constituents.
But such bellicose posturing makes sense when we remember Lee's statement that he takes his cue from the Utah Legislature instead of public opinion.
