State colleges: Utah golfer Daniel Engle is fourth after first round at Cowboy Classic

University of Utah golfer Daniel Engle was tied for fourth place after shooting a 71 in the first round of the University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Utes sat in 10th place out of 24 teams after the opening round.

The tournament is being played on the The Talking Stick Golf Club's par-70 North Course, where windy and dusty conditions affected scores Monday. The second round was canceled, and the event shortened to 36 holes.

Jeff Jones of Weber State was tied for sixth place at 3-over 73, and the Wildcats were in 17th place.

At the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz., BYU's Lea Garner was tied for fourth place after shooting a 5-over 77, helping put the Cougars in a tie for fifth place.

Weber State's Kelsey Chugg (79) was tied for 16th place, but the Wildcats were 17th in the team standings at Ocatillo Golf Resort.

Women's tennis

BYU 4, Washington State 3 • In Provo, the host Cougars' Desiree Tran won a hard-fought No. 2 singles match, beating Ksenia Googe 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6), to seal the win.

Baseball

BYU's nonconference game against Washington on Monday was rained out and will not be rescheduled. The Cougars are set to host Utah at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Park.
