A Look Back: Photos of Park City's devastating fire of 1898

Each Friday, The Salt Lake Tribune presents images from its archives and the archives of the Utah State Historical Society in a special series called A Look Back. A devastating fire of 1898 in Park City is our subject today.

Park City suffered terrible fires in 1882 and again in 1885. The worst disaster came on June 19, 1898, when fire raged through the Park City commercial district. It was the greatest fire in the history of Utah. Main Street was destroyed. Losses were estimated at more than $1 million. About 200 business houses and dwellings were destroyed. The city was left in ruins. The people of Park City, however, banded together and rebuilt their town. By the 1920s, Park City was rebuilt completely.
