Trib too liberal | The Salt Lake Tribune

I read with interest Tribune editor Nancy Conway's column that touted The Tribune's growing success with online readership ("Keeping the record straight on readership," Tribune, March 31). I am glad to hear it.

There has always been interesting, intense competition for readership and revenue between The Tribune and Deseret News. The News, of course, enjoys a somewhat captive audience. Even so, with its unbalanced news and opinions, The Tribune leaves much potential for growth on the table.

Many years ago, when I was briefly on The Trib's sports staff in the early 1950s, we proudly displayed every morning at the top of the front page a greeting that The Salt Lake Tribune was "One of America's great newspapers." Where have those days gone?

I am still a subscriber, but a left-wing, liberal newspaper, as The Tribune has sadly become, makes no sense in our conservative market. I am not suggesting the paper move to the right, just to the middle, where every responsible newspaper should be.
