Provo • Portland hit a triple and a home run in the top of the ninth inning to pull away from BYU, 8-4, in West Coast Conference baseball Thursday night.
Jacob Hannemann went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs for the Cougars (17-15, 5-5), who had won four straight games.
Trace Hansen was 2 for 5 and Kelton Caldwell had two runs and a double for BYU, which plays at Portland on Friday and Saturday.
Utah Valley 10, Houston Baptist 3 • In Orem, Adam Gunn pitched a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out five and walking none, as the Wolverines opened a four-game Great West Conference series with a dominant performance.
Five Utah Valley (13-18, 4-1) players had two hits, including Kade Andrus, who scored and knocked in two runs.
Dixie State 8, Grand Canyon 1 • In St. George, Mike Dedrick allowed just three hits while striking out eight in seven innings to lead the Red Storm over the PacWest-leading Antelopes.
Kevin Kline went 4 for 5 with a triple and three runs scored, while Jordan Hanley was 3 for 5 with three RBIs for Dixie (24-9, 17-8).
Men's tennis
BYU 6, Portland 2 • In Portland, Ore., Patrick Kawka earned a decisive win at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2 as the 39th-ranked Cougars remained unbeaten in the West Coast Conference.
Francis Sargeant won at No. 2 singles, Keaton Cullimore won at No. 4 singles and John Pearce won at No. 6 singles for BYU (17-4, 5-0), which has won six straight matches.
Utah State 6, Seattle 1 • In Logan, the Aggies won three doubles matches and five of six singles matches for their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season.
Sven Poslusny won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. He also partnered with Matt Sweet to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.
Utah State is 6-11 and 1-2 in conference play. Seattle is 1-19.
Women's tennis
UTEP 6, Utah State 1 • In El Pase, Texas, McKenzie Davis earned the lone point for the Aggies (5-10), winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 1 singles.
