A hit-and-run crash in Cottonwood Heights ended moments later with the suicide of the driver suspected of leaving the scene of the crash.
Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Mark Askerlund said the 33-year-old man was believed to have been drinking before his Honda CRV rear-ended another car about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
The man sped away from the scene of the crash in the 6700 South block of Wasatch Boulevard. Police, who received his license plate number from witnesses, were on the way to his home when they received another call of a gunshot at the same address.
Askerlund said Wednesday that the man's roommate had called 911 after finding him in his bedroom, dead from a head wound. A 12-gauge shotgun was found with the body.
Askerlund said the man had two prior convictions for driving while under the influence of alcohol, and evidence in the car found abandoned near the home, in the middle of a street indicated that he had been drinking at the time of the accident.
The identity of the man was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Askerlund said the driver of the other car was not injured.
