Unified Police Department officers on Monday were searching for a man reportedly seen wandering around a Millcreek middle school parking lot with a handgun.

Detective Ken Hansen said that at about 9 a.m. a teaching assistant spotted a Latino male in his 20s walking around cars at Roosevelt Middle School, 3225 S. 800 East, with a handgun held to his side.

As the man left the parking lot eastbound, Hansen said the man pulled the gun's slide back and racked a round into its chamber.

Granite School District officials placed the school on lock down until the end of the school day as a precaution, and school district officers were stationed at the school for the day.

Unified officers, meanwhile, were searching the nearby neighborhoods for the man, who was described as being about 6 feet tall with short dark hair and weighing about 170 pounds. He was wearing a tan coat and blue jeans.
