Utah State's Kerwynn Williams keeping his routine ahead of NFL Draft

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Kerwynn Williams will try to keep everything normal. Stick to routine. Do the things he does every weekend.

The difference is this weekend, it's likely that one phone call will change his life.

"I'm going back to Las Vegas, and I'm not going to do anything special," he said. "I'm going to go about my day doing normal things, and just wait for my name to be called."

That's one way to wait out the NFL Draft.

The 5-foot-8 running back has hopes of going in the mid- to late rounds of the draft this weekend. Between his tape at Utah State and his workouts - he declines to say where he's been, preferring discretion - it seems likely that at least one team will be prepared to draft one of the most explosive players for the Aggies last season.

"I wouldn't say my game is 100 percent perfect, and definitely pass protection is an area I continue to work on," he said. "But I feel like I do a good job running the ball, and also catching out of the backfield. I feel like I can do a lot."

That should show up for scouts when reviewing his senior year, which included more than 1,500 yards rushing and nearly 700 yards receiving. The biggest knock on him, really, is his size.

But Williams isn't worried about the factors he can't control. He spent the offseason so far training with fellow running backs who are looking for a shot. UCLA's Jonathan Franklin and UNC's Giovani Bernard have become friends in the process.

"Being able to work with them made me work that much harder," he said. "We all did a great job of pushing each other."

Williams said he enjoyed being at Utah State's spring game, but it made him itch all the more to get back to football. He's ready to be back at it.

"I'm very excited about the draft," he said. "It's been a long journey, and I'm ready for the next step."
