The Utah Department of Transportation is evaluating a sinkhole that formed near the area of 5400 South and 3200 West in Taylorsville.

UDOT spokesman Adan Carrillo said the hole is in the intersection of the two streets and is between 10 and 20 feet deep. UDOT technicians were at the scene trying to determine the cause. No injuries were reported.

The hole itself is about 3 feet wide but widens to about 6 feet under the road's surface, Carrillo said.

Carrillo said the hole was caused by an old corrugated metal pipe underneath the roadway that collapsed, leading to the road's subsurface to erode. Crews will work throughout the weekend to fill the hole and the department hopes to lift lane restrictions by early Monday morning.

"They're going to be busy this weekend," Carrillo said.

As the crews work, travel will be restricted on 3200 West and on 5400 South to just on lane in each direction. Southbound access onto 5400 South from 3200 West will be closed off entirely. Carrillo said that access to businesses in the area will still be open.
