There is only one problem with Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker's "preferred alternative" of 1100 East for Phase 2 of the Sugar House streetcar: Few residents of Sugar House agree with the alignment, including members of the City Council who represent the area.

The input received at several community meetings indicates that residents do not want a streetcar going up 1100 East and instead support a 2100 South alignment by a margin of 2 to 1.

The 2100 South alignment runs adjacent to a beautiful local park, serves a new generation of transit riders at Highland High School and supports the burgeoning business district at 21st & 21st. By stubbornly moving forward with the 1100 East alignment, the City Council serves to undermine the role of the residents in guiding our elected representatives to our preferred alternative.

I favor cleaner air with more transit and streetcars, but not if the decision will further convince my passionate neighbors that there is no such thing as good government.
