The National Rifle Association's robots are out in force with the incessantly repetitious nonsense NRA talking points that they view as logic.

In "Obesity kills" (Forum, April 28), Cody James rolled out the famous trope of "we can't work on gun-related problems until everything else is fixed," arguing that obesity-related heart disease kills more Americans than guns, so we must first focus on treadmills before guns. Some overweight people may kill others, but they do it with guns.

Or take Japan, which has neither an obesity nor a gun problem. Is a rational policy approach to firearms their reward for healthy eating?

In "Guns and Prohibition" (Forum, April 28), Daisy Pike runs with that tried-and-true favorite: If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. That argument, of course, ignores the reality that in the entire rest of the civilized world, neither citizens with guns nor criminals with guns are a problem. We have a planet's worth of proof that gun bans work.
