A Tooele man was fatally injured late Wednesday morning when his car rear-ended a highway maintenance vehicle on Interstate 80 in Salt Lake County.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said the crash occurred about 9:30 a.m. when a westbound Audi sedan slammed into the truck, which was spraying weeds near 7200 West.

Todd Stephens, 35, the driver of the Audi, apparently died on impact. He was not using a seat belt, the UHP reported.

The 57-year-old driver of the Utah Department of Transportation maintenance truck, who was using a seat belt, was not injured.

"The UDOT truck was in the left shoulder emergency lane and partially in the No. 1 lane [of travel]. The vehicle had lights and directional arrows activated," Johnson said.
