Construction is expected to start next week on what will be one of the largest residential communities built along the Wasatch Front since the housing market collapsed five years ago.

Destination Homes, a Layton-based builder, will begin installing roads and other infrastructure on 83 acres centered at 200 N. Angel St. in Kaysville. Close to 300 homes will be constructed over the next five to eight years, Brad Wilson, president of the company, said Thursday.

"The new Hill Farms community will become the residential jewel of Davis County," he added.

Homes will be priced from the "high $200,000s" to as much as $700,000, Wilson said. Lot sizes will range from less than a quarter-acre to a half-acre.

The company expects to have two model homes open for potential buyers to view by early fall. Designs for those and the other homes that will fill out Hill Farms will be the work of Urban Design Associates, the Pittsburgh-based architectural firm that Kennecott Land Co. used at its Daybreak residential project in South Jordan.

Hill Farms has been in the planning stages for three years. Wilson said Destination Homes decided to go ahead with the project now because consumer demand for new houses is skyrocketing.

"We are [already] building in 12 to 14 communities [along the Wasatch Front], and there is a real lack of inventory," Wilson said. "For the first time in probably five or six years, we are seeing a lot of buyers come into our models and buying homes in significant numbers."

Destination Homes expects to sell about 200 homes this year. That's close to 40 percent more than last year, Wilson said.
