Saturday will debut "Open Streets Salt Lake City" — a festival along an eight-block stretch of 300 South downtown.

The free event will be closed off to auto traffic to create room for pedestrians, skaters and bicyclists to enjoy the public space between 600 West and 200 East on 300 South. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will connect a variety of downtown events, including the 10th Annual LiveGreen SLC! Festival at Library Square, the Tour de Brewtah at Gallivan Center and the Utah Archaeology Week Open House at the Rio Grande Depot.

Along the Open Streets route, activities will include a bicycle rodeo for kids, Zumba, face painting, free in-line skate rentals, dance classes, yoga classes, bike polo, lawn games at Pioneer Park and much more.

Businesses are a major focus of Open Streets Salt Lake City. Storefronts along the route will extend into the street during the event.

"Open Streets SLC is a great way to promote wellness and alternative methods of transportation in a local community," said Mark Kindred, chairman of Open Streets Salt Lake City. "Not only are we trying to promote alternative transportation, but we want community and local business to realize the wellness benefits of biking and walking around downtown Salt Lake City."
