Funeral set for retired Utah Guard adjutant general

Funeral services for John L. Matthews, 80, retired adjutant general of the Utah National Guard, will be Monday.

Matthews died Tuesday at Alta View Hospital in Sandy from complications after a fall.

A fighter pilot, he rose through the ranks in the Utah Air National Guard, becoming air commander in 1979. He was Utah's top guardsman as adjutant general from 1982 to 1994, and retired in 1994.

The family plans a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 South, Sandy, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the LDS Crescent Ridge Stake Center, 1265 E. 11000 South, Sandy.

The funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the stake center, followed by burial at Provo City Cemetery.

The Utah National Guard will provide full military honors during the service.
