A 3-year-old girl suffered a cardiac arrest Thursday and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after she fell off a slide at her West Valley City home.

The fall happened in the home's backyard just after 3 p.m., according to West Valley City police Sgt. Jason Hauer. He said that the girl lost consciousness after the fall.

West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Bob Fitzgerald said the girl's mother performed CPR after discovering the girl. The mother was in the house when the child fell.

Paramedics were able to restore the girl's pulse, Fitzgerald said, but he said the girl was "extremely critical" Thursday afternoon.

Fitzgerald said it was unclear whether the girl's injuries were caused by the fall or a medical condition.

She was taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital, a short distance from her house, and then flown in a medical helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

Fitzgerald described the plastic slide as no more than 4 feet tall.
