Layton • Up three runs going into the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday, Davis pitcher Zac Fuller lazily walked to the mound to finish off Region 1 rival Layton.

The right-handed hurler had already struck out nine and his pitch count was hovering around 100, but he coolly warmed up, throwing hard to catcher Bronson Larsen.

Teammate Jackson Peacock yells out words of encouragement: "We got this, you got this!" Peacock shouted. "We got the lead. You don't have to do anything fancy."

True enough. Fuller blew away the final three batters, striking out the side to preserve the Darts' 6-3 win.

When the first Lancer batter entered the box in that final frame, Larsen tried to get his pitcher to tease the player at the plate and throw outside.

Fuller wasn't having it.

"I was trying to go more soft, but he wanted to go right at them," Larsen said.

Davis coach David Leo didn't know if sending Fuller out for the final inning was the best idea, but the senior wanted the ball. And with the ball in his hand, Fuller finished what he started.

Leo and Larsen both wound up happy that Fuller, who totaled 12 strikeouts, shook them off.

"I wanted to yank him but he said, "I got this,' " Leo said. "I guess we're happy I kept him in."

Fuller's dominant pitching and the Darts' timely hitting put them atop the Region 1 standings.

Davis scored playing smallball, moving the baserunners along with strings of singles and aggressive running from Peacock.

In the fourth, after hitting a double, Peacock barreled towards home on a hit by Kaden Day. Rounding third, Peacock channeled his inner-linebacker and made a hard slide at the plate.

"He's a monster, an animal," Fuller said. "I was just stoked that he got that one through for insurance."

With two games remaining in the season, the Darts are trusting Fuller to make the right pitches.

"We are always good with Zac on the mound," Peacock said. "He is just phenomenal." —
