The battle cry for the Beaver baseball team has been the same since the first pitch of the season: Let's get to the top of the mountain and taste the water.

The Beavers are entering the Class 2A state playoffs, which open Saturday, confident they can take that drink of water after posting a perfect 12-0 record in region play.

"This year we've done things right," Beaver coach Curt Heslington said. "Solid defense, good pitching and aggressive on the bases has resulted in a heck of a season."

Sam Myers has been the Beavers' workhorse on the mound. The senior hurler is 9-0 with an overpowering fastball that befuddles hitters. He's split time on the mound with junior Tilston Bradshaw.

"Tilston has just a deadly calm about him," Heslington said. "I attribute our pitching and hitting to the athleticism of this team and their determination to do something that has never been done before."

Manti is one of the favorites to knock off the Beavers, the lone undefeated team in Class 2A. The Templars, who posted an 8-0 record in region, have been riding the arm of T.J. Pogroszewki.

"Every time you face Manti, you know you're in for it," Heslington said. "They are a very good team. They play a tough ballgame that has worked out well for them this year."

Manti and Beaver both are host sites for Saturday's games. Summit Academy, which went 6-2 in Region 14, and Grand County, which finished 8-2 in Region 15, are the other two host sites Saturday.

"You can't discount anybody," Heslington said. "Everyone is playing at No. 1 levels. We just got to keep playing at a high rate of success."

Gunnison Valley, which went 5-3 in Region 16, is the defending state champ. —
