Last week, headlines and lead stories on network newscasts were filled with the announcement by NBA basketball player Jason Collins that he is gay. So what?

It's Collins' choice and right to be what he wants to be, but with the Benghazi issue in Libya still a muddled mess, gun control a controversial flash point, immigration a hot topic and too many people without substantive or no work, let's get our priorities straight. If Collins is the principle story, the media really should get a life.

I don't care whether Collins is gay, and I'm sure millions of others share that opinion. We wish him a useful future, but with the world tumbling into a morass of international and domestic violence, the needs of many Americans still not being met, this preoccupation with an individual's personal preference is of far less importance than the tragic loss of life our nation has experienced during the past few months.

Now, print and broadcast media, on to the important stories that affect all of us.
