A missing 69-year-old Millcreek man was being treated at a hospital Sunday afternoon after a Unified police officer spotted him nearly eight miles away from home.

Derald Nielson, who suffers from advanced Alzheimer's disease, was found by the officer about 1:15 p.m. as he walked near 6200 South and Redwood Road in Taylorsville, police said.

Nielson had last been seen by his wife about 10 a.m. Saturday at their Millcreek home near 1350 East and 3600 South. When she went to check on him about noon Saturday, he was gone, police said.

Officers believe Nielson took his dog for a walk, but the dog returned without him.

Police combed the neighborhood Saturday and used reverse 911 to call all residents who lived in a radius of several miles to Nielsen's home.

Nielsen was eventually located outside the search radius.

Police said Nielsen has gone missing in the past and is able to walk long distances.
