BYU basketball lands another prospect, 6-3 combo guard Frank Bartley

A few days after securing a commitment from a Wake Forest transfer who will not be able to play for the Cougars until 2014-15, BYU basketball coaches landed a player on Monday who is eligible to play right away. Frank Bartley, a 6-foot-3 combo guard from Baton Rouge, La., who played at a prep school in California last season, gave BYU a commitment over the weekend, according to the website verbalcommits.com. Bartley played for Future College Prep of Carson, Calif., and helped the team go 52-13 and win the West Coast Prep School Championship. He averaged 19 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while dishing out 6.7 assists and collecting 3.3 steals. Bartley's pending signing and the addition of Wake transfer Chase Fischer last Friday (he has to sit out this coming season, per NCAA transfer rules) means that BYU coaches have just one scholarship left for the 2013-14 season. They are obviously in the market for a big man, but a source with knowledge of their plans said they might hang on to the scholarship for a couple of months, if not the entire 2013-14 season. Another player expected to help them in 2013-14 is Kyle Collinsworth, who returns from his LDS Church mission to Russia later this week. Also, Lone Peak center Eric Mika was recently named MVP of a high school all-star game in Seattle, although his team lost in the game. Bartley played at Christian Life Academy in Louisiana before choosing the prep school route out of high school. He also played football and garnered some recruiting interest in that sport. According to various recruiting websites, Bartley had offers from Loyola Marymount of the WCC, along with Fordham, Illinois State and Auburn. He visited Auburn, BYU, Fordham, LMU and San Diego State. His visit to Provo occurred last weekend, and he committed before leaving.
