A South Jordan man was in serious condition Tuesday, the day after a van he was repairing knocked him down and rolled over his lower torso.

South Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Reed Thompson did not release the identity of the man, other than to confirm he was 23 years old.

The man apparently believed he had put the Ford van's transmission into "park," when it actually was in the "neutral" position. About 4:30 p.m. Monday, the rig unexpectedly rolled forward and over him, crushing the victim's lower abdomen and pelvic area.

The man was conscious and communicating with paramedics at the scene, but due to the potential for internal injuries he was flown by medical helicopter to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, Mecham said.

Thompson said the accident occurred in a residential garage at 2180 W. 11400 South.
