1A boys' golf: Layton Christian opens huge lead

The Layton Christian boys' golf team opened a sizeable cushion after the opening round of the Class 1A state tournament Tuesday.

The Eagles boasted a 23-stroke lead over St. Joseph entering Wednesday's final round at Rose Park Golf Course.

Layton Christian placed four golfers in the top 10 to shoot 309 and open the big lead. Jaece Stokes led the way with a 73, while teammate Austin Geddings was third with a 75 and Nick Norton tied for fifth with a 78. Jitpanu Issaravanich was tied for ninth with an 83.

Stokes won the 1A individual crown last season, which helped lead Layton Christian to the team title.

St. Joseph's Jared Kenny shot the low score in the opening round, carding a 71. He will try to hold onto the lead when he tees off at 8:30 a.m. in the first pairing of the day off tee No. 10. St. Joseph is second after shooting 332.

Green River's Zack Shaffer was fourth with a 77. —
