CBS passes on "NCIS Red" and "Beverly Hills Cop"

Two of the bigger surprises about CBS' just-announced fall schedule were a pair of shows that aren't on it.

The network passed on "NCIS Red," a spinoff of "NCIS: Los Angeles." And on "Beverly Hills Cop," a sequel of sorts to the 1984 movie.

We don't generally see failed pilots, so we have to take CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler's word for it when she says, "Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't." And, given CBS' success, you have to think Tassler knows what she's talking about.

"NCIS Red" was introduced in an "NCIS: Los Angeles" two-parter and featured John Corbett, Kim Raver and Scott Grimes. It is, to all appearances, dead.

That may not be the case for "Beverly Hills Cop," which features Brandon T. Jackson as the son of the character Eddie Murphy played in the original movie and its 1987 and 1994 sequels. (Murphy was to continue in a supporting role on a recurring basis.) There are reports it could land at a cable network.
