The St. Joseph Jayhawks saved their best for last.
St. Joseph flew past the competition to win its third state championship in five years under coach Lou Eddy in Wednesday's Class 1A state girls' golf tournament at Rose Park Golf Course.
"They had their best round of the year today," he said.
Senior Greta Schneider capped her perfect season by winning the 1A individual medal with an 88, eight strokes ahead of second-place Marissa Long from Layton Christian. Eddy said Schneider won every tournament she played in this season, from preseason rounds through region.
"She's just dedicated," he said. "She used her driver once today. She played irons on every other tee, played it down the middle of the fairway and was very successful."
The Jayhawks finished with three golfers in the top 10. Along with Schneider was third-place Mady White (96) and sixth-place Kristen Carney (103).
Eddy said White's best score of the season was Wednesday. The sophomore eclipsed the 100 mark for the first time this season when it counted the most.
St. Joseph finished with a combined team score of 242, while Dugway finished second with 213, edging Layton Christian by one stroke.
Schneider now graduates, but the future remains bright for the Jayhawk program. Both White and Carney, a freshman, return next season along with some upcoming freshman talent in 2014.
Eddy, who guided St. Joseph to back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010, said the talent is there to defend the crown.
"I think they've got a very good chance," he said.
