A rule of thumb: If you see four rackets on the court at Liberty Park for the Class 4A boys' tennis tournament, expect to see some good tennis.

Some of the best players in the state will be paired up at No. 1 doubles. Logan seniors Jordan Larsen and Hunter Ballam are returning for unfinished business after taking second last year. Woods Cross' Landon Oswald and Jens Nielsen are undefeated this season.

Maple Mountain's Kevin Rose and Andrew Blonquist believe they have the right to hoist the trophy, but Timpview's Joshua Harrison and Zack Simpson are ready to play the role of spoiler.

Timpview coach Robert Sperry likes that this isn't a two-horse race but a handful of teams battling for individual and state honors. Sperry, who is taking his squad to Liberty Park to defend its 2012 state title, thinks the players who can endure the heat and pressure while having fun will win.

"There are so many good, competitive teams this year that it is anyone's to win," Sperry said. "The difference will be those players that remain composed and have fun while playing. It should be an exciting tournament."

Timpview's Matt Pearce will try to win another state title by relying on his powerful backhand at No. 1 singles. He took the crown at No. 2 singles last season.

"He plays with good, controlled aggression, solid fundamentals," Sperry said. "There are high expectations for him to do well."

Spanish Fork coach Denise Daniels said eyes should be on Juan Diego in 3A action in St. George. With junior Brendan Kempin set at No.1 singles and freshman Ryan Kempin representing No.2 singles, the Soaring Eagle will be tough to beat.

Daniels said the Dons are putting a lot of hope in their doubles to earn top honors.

Senior Ben Rosenbaum and junior Jared Dixon went undefeated in regional play, and will compete at No. 1 doubles for the Dons.

Daniels hopes Rosenbaum and Dixon help spark a deep run.

"There is going to be a lot of good teams playing this week," she said. "I expect to see not just us but Desert Hills, Juan Diego and Dixie doing well." —
