Steve Powell's not getting out of prison next week

Steve Powell, father-in-law of Susan Powell, will not be released early until the prison approves his plans for life on the outside.

Powell was sentenced for voyeurism for recording images of two neighbor girls in their bathroom last year. He's eligible for early release on May 23, but prison officials are still in the process of approving his offender release plan.

"That is a plan for where you're going to live, how you're going to support yourself, what treatments available ... an offender submits his release plan and we look at proximity to victims, treatment opportunities, job opportunities," said spokesman Chad Lewis. After they approve the plan, Powell would be released 35 days later.

The prison can reject his plans if they have concerns about them and hold him until April 2014, but after that, his maximum sentence is up and he's free to go, Lewis said.

Susan Powell disappeared from her West Valley City home in 2009. While investigating the case, police served a search warrant on Steve Powell's home in Puyallup, Wash., where they found the photographs of neighbor girls.

Powell has been classified as "low risk" to commit another crime upon release, spokeswoman Selena Davis said last June.
