Sports briefs: Ex-Colt Dwight Freeney agrees to deal with Chargers

NFL • The San Diego Chargers agreed Saturday to a two-year deal with aging star pass rusher Dwight Freeney that could be worth $13.35 million. The deal to bring Freeney to the Chargers came four days after outside linebacker Melvin Ingram tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a padless practice.

Freeney is 33 and entering his 12th season. He was Indianapolis' career sacks leader with 107½ but the Colts decided not to re-sign him in the offseason. After recording 13½ sacks in 2009, his totals declined each of the past three years. He had five in 2012.

Federer, Nadal to meet in final

TENNIS • Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will meet in the Italian Open final Sunday in Rome — exactly a week before the French Open starts. In Saturday's semifinals at the Foro Italico, Federer held off Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-6 (5), 6-4. Six-time Rome champion Nadal defeated Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4, a day after Berdych rallied to beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

On the women's side, top-ranked Serena Williams moved within one victory of her fourth consecutive title. She'll face third-seeded Victoria Azarenka in the final.

Williams beat Romanian qualifier Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 and extend her career-best winning run to 23 matches. Azarenka beat Sara Errani 6-0, 7-5.

Switzerland knocks off U.S.

hockey • Alise Post raced to her third straight victory in the USA Cycling Elite BMX National Championships on Saturday in Chula Vista, Calif., holding off Cedar Hills native and BYU graduate Arielle Martin in the final.

Post, from St. Cloud, Minn., won all three motos and semifinals. Fellow 2012 Olympian Nic Long won his second men's title. Long, from Lakeside, Calif., used a quick burst out of the gate to gain an edge over Olympic teammate and defending national champion Connor Fields of Henderson, Nev.

Switzerland knocks off U.S.

Hockey • The United States was upset 3-0 by Switzerland in the semifinals of the ice hockey world championship Saturday in Stockholm. The Swiss will face Sweden in Sunday's final after the Swedes defeated co-host Finland 3-0 in the earlier semifinal. Nino Niederreiter, Julian Walker and Reto Suri scored for the Swiss, who emerged as the surprise of the tournament by winning all seven of their group-stage games.
