Orem • With elimination on the line, Orem figured the best way to protect a lead was to add to it.
The Tigers scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game to end Olympus' season with a 4-1 win over the Titans in the second round of the Class 4A boys' soccer state tournament Friday.
The game was much closer than the final score. Orem took the lead eight minutes into the game when Daniel Corbett took a pass from Finn Brian and punched it in.
Olympus appeared to catch the Tigers off-guard when Mason Earl sent a shot from about 35 yards out that caught the top of the net late in the first half to leave the teams tied at the break.
"We came in at halftime and settled ourselves down and got back into our game," Orem coach Ed Louder said. "We pretty well kept the ball on their end in the second half."
Orem broke through for the key goal of the game thanks to a well-placed corner kick by Johnny Bradshaw. The Titans simply couldn't mark up everyone, which was just fine with Tony Pesqueira. He broke down the middle of the box and scored what proved to be the winning goal midway through the second half.
"He put a nice low ball across, and we put a lot of guys through the box" Louder said. "Tony was on the back post. He made a nice run and the ball got through, and that's the one where he put [it] in the back of the net."
Orem kept the pressure on instead of sitting on the lead. The Tigers put the game out of reach with less than five minutes remaining after a few near misses.
Corbett scored his second goal of the game when he took a pass from Jake Thompson, beat a pair of Olympus defenders and kicked Orem to a 3-1 lead.
The Tigers put an exclamation point on the win in extra time when Thompson was rewarded a penalty kick.
The win earned Orem, the Region 8 champ, a date with East on Tuesday in the 4A semifinals. Class 4A state tournament
