Funeral set Thursday for Frances Monson, wife of Mormon president

Funeral services are set Thursday in downtown Salt Lake City's Tabernacle for Frances J. Monson, wife of LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson.

No public viewing was planned but the public is invited to attend the noon funeral, officials of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Monday.

Further details on the funeral, including speakers and burial plans, will be released later this week.

Frances Monson died Friday at age 85 after having been hospitalized for several weeks. The Utah-based faith said she died of causes incident to age.

Born Oct. 27, 1927, Frances Beverly Johnson was the youngest and only daughter of Franz E. Johnson and Hildur Booth Johnson. She had four brothers.

She met her future husband, Thomas S. Monson, in 1944 at the University of Utah. The couple were married in the Salt Lake Temple on Oct. 7, 1948. They had three children: Thomas Lee, Ann Frances and Clark Spencer.

Monson became the 16th president of the LDS Church in February 2008, succeeding the late Gordon B. Hinckley.
