The Salt Lake County district attorney's office will not have to release records related to the Danielle Willard officer-involved fatal shooting, the Salt Lake County Council decided Tuesday.

The council voted 7-1 to deny a request by Melissa Kennedy's attorney for records pertaining to the November shooting in West Valley City.

Jon Williams, who represents Kennedy, Willard's mother, argued that the denial of the records was "inappropriate" and that his client has already waited 6 ½ months for answers.

"She wants some sort of answers," Williams said. "And she deserves some answers."

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said he sympathizes with Willard's family but that the investigation into the 21-year-old's death is ongoing and releasing the requested information could potentially compromise the investigation.

Willard was killed by West Valley City Detectives Shaun Cowley and Kevin Salmon during an alleged drug bust.

Gill has said it's likely that the decision into whether the two officers were justified in using deadly force could take at least two more months.
