DVD • Walt Longmire isn't exactly the reincarnation of Marshal Matt Dillon, but they might be distant cousins. He's a modern-day cowboy who's strong, relatively silent and morally upright. Based on the character in Craig Johnson's Longmire novels, Walt (Robert Taylor) is a Wyoming sheriff and a widower still struggling with the death of his wife.

He tackles some pretty serious crimes, assisted by his hotshot young deputy, Victoria "Vic" Moretti (Katee Sackhoff, "Battlestar Galactica") from Philadelphia and another deputy, Branch Connolly (Bailey Chase, "Saving Grace") who not only wants to modernize the department but is running to replace his boss.

A big part of the appeal of Season 1 is that the pace is so much more deliberate than your average 21st-century cop show — and it works. —
