A Cuban national was being held without bail Thursday after being arrested in a west Salt Lake City stabbing that left a man in serious condition.

Salt Lake City police Det. Dennis McGowan said the 50-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed the 24-year-old victim during an altercation in an area frequented by transients near the 100 South block of 600 West about 6:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The victim had left the area briefly and returned, finding unspecified personal property missing. He confronted the 50-year-old suspect, a fist fight ensued and then the suspect allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the victim.

As the victim lay bleeding from a chest wound, the suspect fled the scene on foot but was later located by police officers and arrested without further incident.

The suspect was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of second-degree felony counts of aggravated assault and possession of cocaine. He was being held on an Adult Probation and Parole order.

The victim initially was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but was upgraded Thursday after being stabilized.
