West Valley City police respond to junior high food fight

Flying French fries and other items filled the air Thursday afternoon after a couple hundred Granite School District junior high students decided to launch a spontaneous all-out food fight.

Ultimately, the West Valley City police were called to help restore order.

Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said the incident started about 12:30 p.m. at West Lake Junior High School when two youths got into a physical altercation. For unknown reasons, it escalated into a larger food fight, he said.

"The other kids just decided to get involved," Horsley said, noting that the end of the school year is typically when students start exhibiting "a little more wild behavior."

He said about 600 students were in the cafeteria at the time, and that a couple hundred of those students decided to throw food.

"To be honest, I don't know what was on the menu today," he said, in answer to a question.

The school was briefly locked down while police restored order.

No one was injured, and school officials continued to investigate possible discipline.
