A Roy man convicted of negligent homicide for a single-car crash that killed his longtime girlfriend has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Shawn David Brady, 30, was originally charged with second-degree felony negligent homicide for the June 24, 2011 accident, but a jury last month found him guilty of a lesser count of class A misdemeanor negligent homicide.

On Friday, 2nd District Judge Michael Lyon sentenced Brady to one year in jail, the maximum punishment for the crime.

According to court documents, Brady was driving at a high rate of speed with his girlfriend, Nicole Gear, 23, in the passenger seat.

They were near 3100 W. Midland Drive in Roy, when Brady veered into oncoming traffic and over-corrected, going off the roadway.

The car struck a light pole and then careened through a fence before hitting a parked truck, according to court documents.

Utah Highway Patrol investigators believe Brady was driving between 95 and 110 mph on the road, which has a posted speed limit of 50 mph.
