Four injured, two critically, in Provo Canyon crash

Four people were injured Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Provo Canyon.

About 12:47 p.m., a Chevrolet Suburban going south on U.S. 189 pulled off to the right and tried to make a U-turn near mile post 9. But in doing so, it turned in front of a southbound Nissan Versa, which T-boned the Suburban, said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.

The three women in the Suburban were not hurt, but all four people in the Versa were taken to the hospital. The 44-year-old driver, Ruth Peterson of Springville, had a broken back, and her 18-year-old front-seat passenger had back and rib injuries. A 12-year-old boy in the backseat injured his head and a 16-year-old boy in the backseat injured his right leg — neither were wearing seat belts, according to UHP.

The driver and 12-year-old were listed in critical condition, and the 18-year-old was taken to the hospital in serious condition, Johnson said. The 16-year-old's injuries are considered more minor, he said.

Erin Lambert, the 19-year-old driver of the Suburban, was cited in the accident.

Traffic was temporarily reduced to one lane in both directions after the crash, Johnson added.
