It seems even as the spring blooms around them, the Utes student athletes are hitting the books.

The University of Utah's athletic teams set a department record for the highest cumulative grade point average for the spring semester for the second straight year. Utah's teams averaged a 3.153 GPA for the spring, besting the previous record of 3.136 from the spring of 2012.

Utah has now posted six consecutive semesters with an athletic department GPA of 3.0 or better, another school first.

More than 60 percent of Utah's student-athletes (278 of 434) made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with a GPA of 3.0 or better in 2012-13. Nearly a third of them earned Dean's List status, which requires a minimum GPA of 3.5.

The gymnastics and men's and women's ski teams all placed 100-percent of their respective athletes on the honor roll. The gymnastics team also posted the highest GPA among all teams in 2012-13, including a 3.772 in the spring semester.
