As a resident of Salt Lake City, and after the appalling air toxicity of this winter, I found the new vehicle emissions rules described in Jeff Miller's "Embrace clean air standards" (Opinion, May 18) particularly appealing.

We have barely had a chance to take a deep breath of fresh, spring air before finding ourselves entering the summer's ozone smog season.

In our valley, 57 percent of the problem has been attributed to cars. For those of us who must drive to work or to pick up the kids from school, simply not driving is not a solution.

The Environmental Protection Agency's new Tier 3 standards will provide us with cleaner gasoline, at only a penny per gallon, and less-polluting, more fuel-efficient cars to make our commutes less costly to everyone, producing billions in economic and health benefits.
