Provo police check pipe bomb sightings, find no bombs

Two Provo police were investigating two reports of different pipe bombs on Sunday afternoon.

Lt. Mathew Siufanua said two residents called about three hours apart reporting what appeared to be pipe bombs.

The first call, which came in about 11 a.m. near 600 West and 300 South, turned out to be a homemade firecracker that failed to ignite, he said. Police do not know who left the device behind.

The second suspicious object was discovered by a man mowing his lawn about 1:20 p.m., Siufanua said. He said the man suspected it was a pipe bomb, picked it up and moved it to the nearby roadway, and then called police.

The bomb squad later determined it was a battery housing unit for a bicycle light.

Siufanua said anyone who discovers a suspicious object should not touch it, but move away and call police.
