Woman gives birth to twins along rural I-80 in Tooele County

A woman gave birth Sunday morning to twins along a rural stretch of Interstate 80 in Tooele County.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jimmy Banks said the woman, who was 30 weeks pregnant, and her boyfriend were eastbound about 9 a.m. on Interstate 80 about 25 miles east of Wendover when the woman went into labor.

The boyfriend pulled over and helped deliver the couple's first baby, who wasn't breathing. Dispatchers helped him initiate CPR until troopers could arrive, Banks said. When troopers arrived, they helped clear the baby's airway and get the infant breathing, he said.

A short time later, troopers delivered the second infant, who let out a "good, healthy scream," he said.

The mother and babies were flown to Intermountain Medical Center for treatment. The trio — and the baby's father — were all expected to be fine, Banks said.

Sunday's batch weren't the first twins to be born along I-80 in Tooele County. Banks said a little more than a year ago, another sergeant delivered a set of twins.
